December 31 – Madison Square Garden – New York City, NY

Set I: AC/DC Bag > Wolfman's Brother, Scent of a Mule, Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan, Lawn Boy, Gotta Jibboo, Farmouse, Pebbles and Marbles, Ocelot, Fluffhead
Set II:
Party Time, Light > Golden Age, Theme From The Bottom, Heavy Things, Ghost, Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley, 46 Days, Suzy Greenberg
Set III:
Cavern, Steam > Auld Lang Syne > Down With Disease, The Wedge, Alaska, Wading In The Velvet Sea, First Tube
Encore:
Slave To The Traffic Light

Crowd Atmosphere: Fans had a little more pep in their step than usual. The energy was high and perhaps the fans were dressed a little more classy than usual. Many male and female fans shuffled into MSG wearing suits or nice dresses. After all, it is New Year's Eve.

Best Song: Steam

Bustout of the Night: Ghost

Best Jam: 46 Days

Best Segue: Steam > Auld Lang Syne > Down With Disease

Best Moment: With three sets there were two great moments: Page’s piano solo during “Scent of a Mule” and the actual countdown.

During the eerie onset from “Steam” instruments began rising up and down the stage. As the music unfolded into a high energy jam, acrobatics soared above the crowd. Being so fully immersed in the music and the theatrics the countdown seemed to have come out of nowhere and the balloons came crashing down.

It’s a feeling that’s irreplaceable and unforgettable when Phish then segued into “Auld Lang Syne” and “Down with Disease.”

Sloppiest Moment: Farmhouse

Lights Review: All about the lights. Kuroda gets MVP for sure. He continues to keep the original flow while adding in new elements and filling the arena with colors. Best lights were during "Ghost" with some unique shapes and colors.

Other Notes: Overall, Phish brought in another New Year with a bang. The theatrics were a little cheesy at moments, but definitely entertaining. As far as the setlist goes, a lot of crowd-favorites but some areas lacked flow and it could have used more segues. Highlights included "Light > Golden Age," "Sneakin' Sally" and the "Traffic Light" encore.

December 30 – Madison Square Garden – New York City, NY

Set I: Punch You In The Eye, Prince Caspian > Backwards Down The Number Line, Nellie Kane, The Divided Sky, Sand, Vultures, Rift, Joy, Quinn The Eskimo
Set II: Wilson, Axilla, Piper > Twist, Julius, Golgi Apparatus, Also Sprach Zarathustra, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, David Bowie, The Squirming Coil
Encore: Boogie On Reggae Woman, Good Times Bad Times

Crowd Atmosphere: As expected, the crowd was amped. If anyone has had the opportunity sit behind stage, you will have noticed how significantly the floor moves up and down when the crowd is jumping. It’s an amazing feeling.

Best Song: Divided Sky

Bustout of the Night: Vultures

Best Jam: Piper

Best Segue: Piper > Twist

Best Moment: Boogie On Reggae Woman (Mike's bass brought the house down.)

Sloppiest Moment: Golgi Apparatus

Lights Review: Sitting behind the stage is a tough place to judge the lights, unfortunately.

Twitter Recap: Lack of setlist cohesion is made up for in extremely tight renditions of many crowd favorites.

Other Notes: With the exception of “Piper,” this show did not feature any extended jams or segues much to the dismay of some fans. However, with the exception of a few slip-ups, the playing was tight and featured quite a few standout moments. Here’s the breakdown of my favorite songs:

“Piper” – Hands down the highlight of the night. The band moved through deep funk grooves before finally landing in an ethereal outro guided by Page.

“Divided Sky” – The jam was on point and featured some precisely played phrases by Trey.

“Boogie On Reggae Woman” – Strongest version I’ve heard and featured an explosively funky Mike solo. A terrific encore choice.

Strong takes of “Punch You In The Eye,” “Julius,” “2001,” “David Bowie” and “Squirming Coil” as well.

December 29 – Madison Square Garden – New York City, NY

Set I: The Sloth, You Enjoy Myself, Back On The Train, The Moma Dance, Funky Bitch, Maze, Roses Are Free, Halley's Comet, Run Like An Antelope
Set II: Crosseyed and Painless, Simple, Lifeboy, Guyute, Mike's Song, Chalkdust Torture > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove, Show of Life, Character Zero
Encore: Loving Cup

Crowd Atmosphere: The music rarely let up in intensity, which had the crowd moving all night. Even better energy than the first night.

Best Song: Mike's Song

Photo Credit: Dale B. Bustout of the Night: Lifeboy

Best Jam: You Enjoy Myself

Best Segue: Chalkdust Torture > I Am Hydrogen

Best Moment: "YEM" during the first set.

Sloppiest Moment: Guyute

Lights Review: Kuroda was on point last night. Vigorous rock vehicles like "Antelope," "Crosseyed" and "Chalkdust" created the musical foundation for some incredible light sets.

Twitter Recap: Phish gives night two the full throttle rock and roll treatment.

Other Notes: While the show didn’t build upon the exploratory nature of the night before, it compensated with strong, consistent rock and roll.

A one-two punch of “The Sloth” and “YEM” to open the show got the crowd entrenched in the music very quickly. The “YEM” jam found the band moving from some deep funk grooves to an all-out rock peak.

Photo Credit: Dale B. The “Moma Dance,” “Funky Bitch,” “Maze” and “Roses are Free” were standard renditions but kept everyone in the crowd beaming all the way through the final chorus of “Roses.”

A requisite “Run Like An Antelope” closed out the first set in building-shaking Phish fashion.

The second set offered standard renditions of trusted jam vehicles “Crosseyed” and “Simple” before settling into the rare and very welcome “Lifeboy.”

Also of note was a “Chalkdust” dropped amidst the outro jam of “Mike’s Song,” which was certainly unexpected. It fit together better than one would imagine looking at it on paper.

Overall, a strong show, but I hope they open up the sets a bit more tomorrow with some segues and more inspired jamming.

December 28 – Madison Square Garden – New York City, NY

Set I: Free, Glide > Possum, Cities, The Ballad of Curtis Loew, Stash, Contact > Sample In A Jar, Kill Devil Falls > Bathtub Gin
Set II: Birds of a Feather, Carini > Tweezer > My Friend, My Friend > Rock and Roll > NICU, Bouncing Around The Room, Harry Hood > Bug
Encore: Tube > Rocky Top > Tweezer Reprise

Crowd Atmosphere: Packed to the rafters, the Garden was combusting with energy as Phish laid down the opening chords of “Free” – the first time this powerful anthem has ever started a show. Phish kept the crowd grooving all the way to the building-shaking "Tweezer Reprise."

Best Song: Bathtub Gin

Bustout of the Night: Rocky Top (Honorable mention to "Glide.")

Best Jam: Rock and Roll

Best Segue: Carini > Tweezer

Best Moment: "Free" opening the show – a sign we were in for a good night and a great run.

Sloppiest Moment: Harry Hood (composed section)

Lights Review: Fantastic as always. Kuroda was on point as he transformed the Garden from a sporting arena into a high-speed spaceship.

Twitter Recap: No warm-up needed, Phish sprints into the NYC New Year's run in stride.

Other Notes: After a few months on hiatus, most fans were anxious to see how long it would take for Phish to find their groove. After tonight’s show, I think there is little doubt in anyone’s mind that it’s going to be a great four nights.

The first-ever “Free” to open the show and a crowd-favorite “Contact” had everybody feeling good.

Photo Credit: Dale B. The first set also featured a great “Ballad of Curtis Loew” cover and standout “Bathtub Gin” to close it out. The rest of the set was solid, but not particularly remarkable. The second set was where Phish kicked it up a notch.

The highlight of the show was the first half of the second set through the end of “Rock and Roll.” A high energy “Birds of a Feather” found the four of them locking in.

“Carini” was top-notch and featured an ethereal segue out of it. One of the best segues of the year had them landing flawlessly into “Tweezer.”

“Tweezer” kept the energy going as they moved into a delicate jam that brought some of the tightest grooves of the night.

“Rock and Roll” has been a centerpiece jam all year and this version did not let up. High-octane shredding propelled the band to some epic peaks.

While the boys were not able to maintain the same level of playing through the rest of the second set, there were some highlights including some thoughtful licks during the “Hood” jam.

Some missed cues in the composed section of “Harry Hood” and a strange set ending “Bug” had some fans griping.

All was good, though as the final peak in “Tweezer” Reprise shook the arena. It was an excellent first night and I have a feeling we’re only just getting started . . .

Don't get a hotel in New York City. Your best bet is to look in New Jersey and take a train over to Manhattan.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION:

I think everyone is hoping that Phish comes into the New Year’s run just as hot as they left off the summer tour.  However, given the vast amount of time that has transpired since the summer shows, I think they might be a little rusty the first few days. Hopefully, they hit their stride early and are in full throttle by the time they hit the New Years Eve show.

I didn’t feel their performances last year at Madison Square Garden measured up to their Halloween run in Atlantic City. On the plus side, a four-night run means that fans are almost guaranteed to get their favorite songs one of the nights.

Whatever they bring to the table this run, there’s still no place I’d rather ring in the New Year than with Phish at MSG.

Song Predicted To Ring In 2012: 2001 > Auld Lang Syne
