REVIEW: Widespread Panic Halloween In Chicago

Staff writer Matt Tapia reviews Widepsread Panic’s three-night Chicago Halloween run – the first three WSP shows he’s ever seen.

--

There is nothing quite like the anticipation of waiting for something you know nothing about. As I stood in line to enter the venue for my first Widespread Panic show this brisk, autumn evening in the Windy City, I was excited to see what was to come.

The show was held in the beautifully ornamented Chicago Theatre, right in the heart of the city’s Loop. I was seated in the upper level and I still felt like I was close to the center of the action.

With an introduction by legendary Chicago DJ Lin Brehmer, the band was ready for their interplanetary trip through time and sound. John Bell gave us a signature JB greeting, welcoming us to the show.

I was impressed greatly by the tightness of this group with transition to transition. No flubs or mix-ups, and every note seemed to be played at the exact moment it needed to be.

I’m familiar with the WSP catalog and “Up All Night” and “North” stuck out as first-set highlights. This was rock and roll at its finest – the way it was meant to be played.

One of the second set highlights was “Saint Ex,” which was sang powerfully and with gut wrenching force coming from JB’s soulful pipes. I danced even more second set than I did the first, just enjoying the jams as they were played.

The encore had a fantastic version of “Baby Please Don’t Go” that really just topped off the night for me and had me on the edge of my seat to see what else this band could do.

The song that popped out the most on this night was “You Got Yours.” With a great “Tall Boy” opener for the second set, the night began to pick up and people started to really get down.

When the “Peace Frog” encore started, I absolutely lost my mind. With the Chicago references all throughout the tune, it made for some happy campers. The “End Of The Show” that followed was made even more danceable with an added mandolin.

Waiting in line for the Aragon Ballroom brought out some very interesting characters. Costumes ranged from a woman dressed as a “Double Dare” game show contestant complete with kneepads to a homeless person (who in retrospect might have just been a guy begging for money).

People scrambled to get in. Luckily, again, I was front row Jimmy side, which I feel is the best place to feel the complete power of his playing. The band took the stage in mostly Chicago themed costume: John Bell was Geoff Peterson (Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show Sidekick), Dave Schools wore a Blackhawks jersey with a hockey mask (perhaps channeling Tony Esposito), Jimmy Herring was Moises Alou, JoJo Hermann was Steve Bartman, Todd Nance was Zoltar The Fortune Teller Machine from “Big” and Sunny Ortiz was Shrek.

The stage set-up was phenomenal – a backdrop for the 1890 Chicago World’s Fair with two huge banners on opposite sides of the stage advertising a magical levitating show and a mysterious Dog Faced Boy. JoJo’s keys were decorated as the Ivy Wall from Wrigley Field and Todd’s drums were underneath a Zoltar frame, just like the machine.

Ending their 25th Anniversary Tour, the band held nothing back. During “Love Tractor” there wasn’t a still body in the whole joint. JB also pulled out every blue note in his voice to belt out a fantastic rendition of “Tail Dagger,” a Howlin’ Wolf ditty.

The second set opened with a monstrous (get it?) “Godzilla > Iron Man > Godzilla” segment. It was so good in fact that Schools tossed his Godzilla statue out into the crowd to some lucky fan.

The rest of the set was just powerful as all hell. The kick drum seemed stronger than usual, making even my clothes vibrate.

For the encore, Schools invited the crowd to sing along and they topped it all off with a communal rendition of “Werewolves of London.” It felt like a true familial atmosphere and was nothing short of magical. With Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath, John Lennon, Howlin’ Wolf, Wilco and Warren Zevon covers, this Halloween was one for the books. Happy 25th Widespread Panic.

Widespread Panic has announced a very limited 2012 tour. "The Wood Tour," as it's being billed, is a unique acoustic tour set for early 2012 to close out the band's 25th anniversary year before they begin their hiatus.

This is Panic's first-ever acoustic tour and with only 11 shows hitting four cities, it will surely be one of the most memorable.

Panic en la Playa: WSP in Mexico

b_150_150_16777215_00___images_0_Images_AlanVanTaoi_cms_image_4dee62d25938a.jpg

Cloud 9 Adventures, the pioneers behind destination concerts hosted in paradisaical settings, have announced that Widespread Panic will host the first Panic en la Playa at the Now Sapphire Resort and Spa in Puerto Morelos on Mexico’s Mayan Riviera from January 31 to February 4, 2012.

The latest event organized by Cloud 9, the organization behind Mayan Holidaze and Jam Cruise festivals, Panic en la Playa promises the same balance of beautiful ambiance and unparalleled artist access.

That's because Panic en la Playa will max out at a capacity of 1,000 fans. Panic, which will play four full shows, will only allow those guests staying at the resort to attend.

Those individuals who find themselves among the 1,000 attendees will enjoy the resort's all-inclusive amenities - which means unlimited food and drink of all kinds, as well as days spent relaxing by the pool, taking a swim in the ocean or enjoying the incredible on-site restaurants and spa

Most importantly, this run of shows will likely be Widespread Panic's last before embarking on an extended hiatus in 2012.
